What are Dental Crowns, and Do I Need Them?

A dental crown is a prosthetic cap that is placed over a damaged tooth. It helps to restore the tooth’s structural integrity and appearance, and can be used with other treatments such as implants and dental bridges to improve overall dental health. You may be recommended dental crowns depending on the condition of your teeth:

  • You have a large cavity that cannot be effectively covered with dental fillings
  • Your teeth require additional strength and support after a root canal treatment, or due to tooth decays
  • A missing tooth may be replaced by attaching a crown to a dental implant
  • Cracked or broken teeth may be covered with a crown to prevent further damage

Same-day Dental Crowns

While traditional dental crowns typically require multiple appointments before they can be fitted, same-day dental crowns offer similar benefits but in a shorter time.

TLC Dental Centre uses CEREC — Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic — that enables dental crowns to be designed, produced, and fitted within the day. The entire process is carried out at the clinic itself, providing greater convenience and quicker service to patients.

Should You Choose Traditional Dental Crowns?

If same-day dental crowns are more convenient and less time-consuming, does this mean that traditional crowns no longer have any use? While one might assume that traditional crowns have become obsolete, there are some instances where convention might be recommended over convenience.

Same-day crowns are made mainly of ceramic or zirconia, while traditional dental crowns can be made from a wider variety of materials, including metals, resin, stainless steel, or porcelain fused to metal (PFM). Same-day crowns are also suited for most dental cases, but traditional crowns are often better suited for more extensive or complicated cases.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Dental crowns, if well taken care of, can last 10 to 15 years, sometimes even longer. Proper care and maintenance, regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene contribute to their longevity.
