What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on treating irregularities in the teeth and jaws. Some of the common issues include
- Overlapping, overcrowding, crooked, rotated, or impacted teeth
- Overbite, underbite, cross bite, or open bite
Braces
Besides having a neat, straight smile, orthodontics also grants many health and functional benefits.
- Properly-aligned teeth are easier to clean, and reduces the likelihood of plaque build-up, cavities, and tooth decay.
- Gum diseases and other oral health issues are also less likely with an aligned bite.
- It also can improve your speech and your ability to chew comfortably.

How do Orthodontic Treatments Work?
Orthodontic appliances, such as braces and aligners, work by exerting a gentle pressure on your teeth. Over time, this induces change in the bone and allows the teeth to shift to the desired position.
For braces, wires, brackets, and elastics are used to correct the teeth’s alignment. Meanwhile, clear aligners such as Invisalign® rely on a series of clear plastic aligners, each worn for a period of one to two weeks.

Is it Suitable for Children?
Children are recommended to have their first orthodontist visit no later than the age 7. While treatment is usually not needed at this age, it is a good time to start monitoring your child’s dental health and look out for any potential issues. Early orthodontic treatment preempts the need for any extensive procedures when they are older.
